Creativity Experience

New Experiences

change, growth, fearEach new experience with someone else changes us on a fundamental level. Sometimes I have difficulty being creative or thinking about what topics to write about.  In these difficult times, I remember fondly of the days when I could see a question, and quickly and easily organize my thoughts, and express my feelings about it.  I was in a flow and easily able to access it.  Such fun!

But sometimes, I follow the same format, and I struggle to form a sentence even to get the beginnings of thought down. Fortunately, there doesn’t have to be a long-stagnant stage in the process of creativity.  You can always do something to spark your creativity.  We are all in charge of this type of action and spirit in life.  Some will fret and worry that with billions of people globally, everything has been created already. But I think that thought process misses the point. Even though there are so many minds in the world, there is only one you! YOU are the only being on the face of this planet who can produce your thoughts, ideas, and view of the world. The things we can create belong to us alone. That is one of the things which makes life great.

Change and Growth Change Everything

I have gone through a great experience that has left an unmistakable and long-lasting mark on me, but sometimes I cannot seem to write as easily as I used to.  This has been a frightening thing to realize.  I have tried approximately a hundred times to start writing about the thoughts and views that I think are important. Still, after a promising first sentence or catchy paragraph, the ideas and creativity would vanish into the ether as if they never existed at all.  I have the drafts to prove it.  Many ideas were generated, developed, and lost. It does not feel good.

But the process of creativity at times is going to be a struggle. It may mean you are not true to yourself. Or perhaps you are trying to appeal to a particular audience or worrying about how you look rather than the creative process itself. Creativity is what it is, and the right audience will find and resonate with it.  Or maybe you are just trying too hard. Whatever the case, keep trying, relax, breathe. Let your creativity flow from within and enrich the world. In doing so, you enrich yourself.

You Aren’t That Person Anymore.

change-quotesWhen I was struggling, it dawned on me that one of the effects of experiencing new people and things in your life is that they change you fundamentally in almost all ways.  They don’t make you better or worse they make you different.  I know that it is called growth, and without the capacity to grow as individuals, we will wither and die, either literally or figuratively, or both.

Of course, the flip side of change is that a whole new level of thought and insight is at your disposal. Like coming to the end of a tunnel and busting through only to find a cache of rooms full of ideas never considered or understood, which impossible before. This is the doorway of creative passion and a realization of a whole new world at your disposal. Write about the things all the new people bring to you, and the lessons of the experiences.

My Past  Writing

Reading through my writing from the past few years, I can mark my development and growth as a road map to my thoughts and insights today.  It feels much like you do when you look at old pictures of yourself.  You remember the moments, and they are special, but that is not you anymore. You are now someone else. Each time you read a new thought and develop as a person, there are new layers of your thought and being exposed to the creative process.

inspirational_words_of_wisdom_quotesHere is to hoping that I can adjust to the new experiences I have and find the topics that will push my growth further along on my journey.  I am looking deep within to find the content that needs to be explored and the edges that need to be smoothed.  It should prove to be an interesting ride no matter what happens. Life always provides what is needed.

I say to all of those people I have met and worked with over the years, “Thanks a lot!”  Seriously, though, I would never have reached these thoughts and ideas without you and the inspiration you brought me by your good and/or bad behavior.

So What Do I Do Now?

I-begin-with-an-idea-300x297It seems clear to me that my writing in this space has to move from the theoretical and move toward being more descriptive about the experiences I have had in life.  That is a challenge but a good one to try.  Only time will tell if my insights are interesting enough to take a look at or not.  All I can say is that all are welcome on this journey, and I am always looking for the next person or situation to provide insight and creativity in any situation.  I am always looking for more knowledge to share and adventure to have. I have been fortunate to have great people in my life. They all have contributed to my thoughts and my pursuit of being a better person mentally, physically, and spiritually.  They have taught me how to treat others by their kindness and their cruelty. Put your creativity as a priority in your life and see what you can bring into the open space of existence.

One of A Kind

The human experience can be a confusing ride. We are all created with unique gifts, Be Differentpersonalities, talents, looks, and likes.  Each of us a one of a kind wonder, but in our society, it seems that our individuality is either discouraged or ignored.  We spend a whole lot of time trying to be the same as others and worrying about fitting into the expectation of society or, more significantly, the approval of others. As I grew up, I was inundated with messages to fit in. Being unique was a horrible fate and avoided at all costs. Life was a struggle to continually “be normal” and not deviate from what society told me we could and should hope to be. If I was experiencing this struggle, I am sure others did too. There have to be others who are hiding their true selves just to fit in.  Don’t let life take away your individuality.  Letting society tell you what you should be, rather than working on being who you should be.  Be unique today, and it all starts with a greater awareness of your thoughts about yourself today.  Notice these ideas and the emotions they bring to the surface in you. The words you use, and the actions that you take.  We are all gifted, and it’s a journey to find our gifts and share them with the world.

Strength Arise When You are Unique

be differentEach of us is unique, and it is one of the gifts that you get just being alive. It is a cruel joke that so much of our programming in life is to deny us the awareness of our unique magic inside. It is no wonder that there is rampant drug use and increasing cases of depression when nobody is really encouraged to be themselves. What could be more painful than not being allowed to be who you are in your natural state?.

I believe that denying our skills, talents, creativity and unique abilities is a punishment that causes much pain and suffering in the world. We should develop a society that embraces differences, not criticize them. All differences bring strength to a family, a workplace, a school, a town, a city, a country, and the world. It is only fear that stops this from happening. Be Unique. Don’t fall in line like a sheep, color your way, run, don’t walk. Be who you feel you are, and never apologize for it.

Defeat Fear, Be Different

Our society has done a masterful job of making all people feel inadequate with themselves in every way be differentpossible. We are bombarded with images of “perfect” people that we should try to look like. This is impossible, so we feel inadequate, and we try to fill those insecurities with “stuff.”  Which is what the marketing propaganda wants. Buy this, and you will feel better. The story we are told makes us believe that we will never be happy until we have all of the “things” we are being sold.  But this has never worked to ease the pain I have felt. You end up with a lot of meaningless stuff and an empty soul.

To allow uniqueness to be really celebrated,  we have to find a way to get over this type of brainwashing, be happy being ourselves, and be comfortable being different and wonderful.  This will only happen when we start to appreciate our unique talents and perspectives. That will allow us to look for and appreciate the uniqueness of others as well. It starts by noticing the programming that you are inundated with and ignoring it. Be different, be yourself, and be proud of being who you are.

 Uniquely You

So how does it feel to know that you are the only one that has ever existed exactly like you? In all the billions of people throughout time, nobody has been like you, and you are one of a kind and unique to you. Others may try to imitate, but they will fail in matching the real thing. That is you and your special ways of doing things.  From how you make cookies to how often you work out at the gym.  You are the only one who does it like you.

There is power in this knowledge. Yes, we are all connected and have similarities with other people, but there isn’t anyone who can think as you do, talk like you do, act as you do, provide the joy you do, or do anything that you can do.  One of the things I find is people who really learn to like themselves. Their strengths and their flaws become unique and special in their lives.  In the end, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about us and the things we have done. It matters what we think, and those thoughts are one of a kind to us.  Look at and notice your thoughts today and how they make you a unique person ready to contribute to the world. See how your unique thoughts lead to your emotions, your words, and, of course, your actions.  Your choices are unique to you.

“You are unique, there is no denying it, and that gift makes you powerful.”

“Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.”-  Margaret Mead

“Being the best is great, you’re the number one. Being unique is greater, you’re the only one.”  –  Anonymous.

“Embrace your uniqueness. Time is much too short to be living someone else’s life.”  –  Kobi Yamada.

Ah, we can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind
Cause your friends don’t dance and if they don’t dance
Well, there are no friends of mine…………

I Feel So Much Gratitude!

Thank You
I was very shy about letting anyone know what I wrote.

by Jonathan Hilton

I was scared to death! Petrified! White knuckle, grab a hold of something, close your eyes and scream scared of what other people would think of my writing. So much so, I really hesitated to ever show it to anyone.  I had one friend who I would “let” read what I thought. They were very safe and supportive.

Finally after a bit of coaxing,  I started to take a few tentative steps out into the world of blogging.  It was a world that is very strange to me, I just never realized how many other people write and share their work.  What an amazing discovery this world has been.  It is a world of dynamic personalities, interesting thoughts and great knowledge.

I was pensive at first because I am careful by nature I guess, and looked at a few blogs, and finally got up my courage to leave a couple of comments.  I was amazed that not only did most of the blogs I commented on read my comments but they replied back!

I read another bloggers account of reading spam and pretending that it was real interaction, because at least it felt like someone had read my thoughts.  That was me for sure. So getting actual feedback from real people was like winning the Super Bowl!

thank
Thank you so much for following one of my blogs in any way!!

Other people actually read what I wrote.  What a great feeling! Now even though I have never met in person any of these people, their stories and writing is a vital part of my daily life.

Finish a job at work, sneak over and see what is happening in the blog world.  See a story that inspires, a video that puts me in awe, or a picture that makes me scared of reptiles.  What ever it is generally, specifically I am inspired.  Creativity comes from this inspiration and I want to express my gratitude for those who have followed me in as special a way as I can!!!

Thank you so much for making my life a richer experience. I placed each person in a random order because I love all of you so very much. If I forgot anyone it is not because you are not in my heart, because you are, it is because I somehow missed you!

Seeking Yourself

It’s Tough To Find Quiet Today

Seek Moments of Solitude
No Man is an Island

by Jonathan Hilton Day 65

As our society has evolved to produce more and more entertainment for people to enjoy, the moments available for actual individual, creative thought have become few and far between.

I know that personally, there were times where I was entertained during every moment of my free time.  It was common to turn the television on  immediately when I got home to add noise to a quiet house, to having music playing all night long to, “help me sleep”, it was a non-stop bombardment of my senses that was actually distracting me from engaging in any original thought at all.

When you look at how our young people choose to live life, it is even worse, between Ipods, computers, video games and television, there is very little left for the imagination to do for them.  They are living an amusement park ride of the senses, allowing for outside influences to supply the entertainment, not developing their individual thoughts or imagination.  This is not everybody, but a large portion of the youth today.

Finding Your Thoughts In The Quiet

time for solitude
Solitude

Solitude is not a dirty word.  As we are developing as people, it seems like you are constantly judged by how many friends you have and that if you are ever by yourself then you must have a problem.

That is not true, what you need to develop is an ability to be by yourself and to use that time not as a sign of social dissatisfaction, but to use it as a time to develop your individual creativity and thoughts.

It is in this time alone that you will be able to find your original thoughts and understand the many experiences that you have.  If you find a quiet time without any distraction and allow your mind to work unfettered by any outside influence, you will experience original thoughts, no matter how intelligent you feel you are.

You will find your own thoughts in the quiet times.  You will be surprised what you will be able to create and understand in that time all by yourself.  You will find many of the things that you are passionate about as well as being able to glean wisdom and understanding from the experiences you have had throughout your life.  You will also start to really notice all of the rich details in the things around you that previously you were oblivious to.

Knowing Yourself is The Ultimate Reward For Solitude

Probably the best thing that finding a little solitude will give you is a much deeper understanding of yourself.  What makes you happy?  What makes you sad? You will find the things that make you smile, and the things that break your heart.

There are many things that people like to do with others and you need to have contact with many people to be a well rounded individual.  But I also think that it is important to find moments of pure solitude so that you understand what parts of yourself you have to offer to others.

So challenge yourself to find some moments of solitude, and to think original thoughts that are yours and yours alone.  All of those in your life will appreciate you and your unique thoughts more than you can imagine.  Give it a try.

Quotes on Solitude:

“Solitude is as needful to the imagination as society is wholesome for the character.” ~James Russell Lowell

” Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a quiet in a crowded day—-like writing a poem or saying a prayer.  What matters is that one be for a time inwardly attentive.” ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh

“Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself and know that everything in this life has a purpose.” ~Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

“In solitude we give passionate attention to our lives, to our memories, to the details around us.” ~ Virginia Woolf

‘In meditation it is possible to dive deeper into the mind to a place where there is no disturbance and there is absolute solitude.  It is at this point in the profound stillness that the sound of the mind can be heard.” ~A.E.I. Falconar

“O Solitude, the soul’s best friend, That man acquainted with himself dost make.” ~Charles Cotton

“Solitude is the nurse of enthusiasm, and enthusiasm is the true parent of genius.” ~ Isaac D’Israeli

“One of the pleasantest things in the world is going on a journey; but I like to go by myself.” ~William Hazlitt

“I am sure of this, that by going much alone a man will get more of a noble courage in thought and word than from all the wisdom that is in books.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

What Price Would You Pay?

Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous?

Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous?
10 years for fame or beauty

by Jonathan Hilton  Day 51

There is no way I would forfeit one day of my life to become extremely attractive or famous because I simply think that both things are subjective and are they really worth it?

Now there are some things that I might seriously consider this proposition but for being attractive or famous I don’t think it would be worth it.

Being Attractive is definitely not worth it

First of all there is the attractive part.  This assumes that being attractive is a purely physical thing, and if I am going to be judged purely on the physical then what about my thoughts, my

attractive not worth it
Beauty is on the inside

creativity and all of the other things which I think are pretty good about me, that make me, me?

Besides I think that many of the problems our society stems from our obsession with physical beauty. Which to one person is different than to another.

When you look at your life and your development as a human being, would you give back the knowledge, understanding and wisdom that you have collected over the years?

Looks are fleeting, but your character lasts forever.  In the end, isn’t a higher intellect and human understanding much more attractive to the right kind of people anyway?

Beauty is subjective and changes, and those who value the aesthetic over the substance of a person tend to be shallow.  Why would you care what they think of how you looked? Those who you would care about would see your value and beauty no matter what your looks were.

I have known very attractive people on the outside who are really unattractive on the inside, and every one seems to be unhappy.

Fame Is Fleeting

When it comes to fame, I think that living ten years of life would be more valuable than

fame is costly and fleeting
What Price For Fame?

whatever fame could bring to you.  I think that being famous is a double edged sword, because everything that you do is thrown wide open for the world to see.

There seems to be very little that famous people keep to themselves, and that might be difficult.

I would never deny a certain human desire to have your thoughts and talents appreciated by others, and that fame might lead to some validation of what you have thought or done.

However, there is another side that will inevitably come with that, of judgment of your entire life.

Everything that you ever did, or anyone that you have ever known would have a piece of you that could be distributed for cash reward.  Real friends are hard to find in any case, I think with fame you would never know who your friends were or what the real intentions of people were.

So I think fame might be interesting, but not worth ten years of my life. Think of all of the experiences you can have in ten years.  There will be beautiful days, great relationships, love, gratitude, anything that you can imagine that you could experience in a ten year period would not be worth giving up for fame.

What Would I Give Ten Years For?

Thinking about this I had to try to think of something that I would give up ten years from my life expectancy for and I came up with a few.  First, I think I would do it for the perfect

young forever
We are our experiences, it is all a valuable part of the process.

relationship, but then I think that the perfect relationship exists for everyone so I could have that without giving up ten years of my life, so I would keep the ten years and enjoy the relationship for that time.

I would be tempted to give up ten years on the end of my life to be able to be young again and know then what I know now, because I wouldn’t waste so much time doing things that are so stupid.

Then you realize that all of those experiences were vital in making you who you are. Even though the experiences of your 20’s were often self destructive, self indulgent and downright idiotic, they were a necessary stop on the journey of your life.

True wisdom can never be gained unless you learn the lessons that life has to offer you.  Knowing what it is like to be excessively drunk, lets you know that your decision to not drink at all is smart.

Having meaningless relationships gives you the capacity to appreciate deeper connections with people today. Acting foolish and not valuing your thoughts, allows you the capacity today to appreciate the wisdom that you have attained and the depth that your thoughts take today.

So the short answer would be that I guess there is nothing that I would give up ten years of my life expectancy for, every second is precious, and needs to be cherished and lived to its fullest potential.

When I first heard this song, I was in my thirties, today in my mid forties, I wonder if I have lived my life to it’s fullest. I can only hope that every day I do.

Jefferson Writing Project Success

by Jon Hilton

This is what I looked like at Jefferson Village School, circa 1980.
This is what I looked like at Jefferson Village School, circa 1980.

It was a few short weeks ago that MY COHORT  and I embarked on the Jefferson Writing Project.  We didn’t know where the winds would blow our thoughts but we knew that each day they would be published on our blogs.

My friend’s name is Hope and we talked at the beginning of February and she wanted to do more writing but had some writing blocks and motivational issues. I suggested a mutual writing project.  She agreed and we made up some simple rules.  I am not a big rules guy because who needs limits on our creativity.

I would make up writing prompts and we each would do a post that day involving the prompt. It was supposed to last for thirty days, but went a bit longer.

I went back and looked over our Facebook messages and it started on the 9th of February and ended today. Hope doesn’t like to write on Sunday! (I can blame her, but I like Sunday off too. 🙂

The only known photo of me playing ball at JVS. Thank God. We were styling!
The only known photo of me playing ball at JVS. Thank God. We were styling!

Coming up with the prompts was not as easy as I thought in the beginning. I know Hope so I wanted to get some good easy to write about things.  Then as I got going I would just make them up in three seconds.

Or if I was cheating, I would start a post on something and use that for the prompt, or make the prompt something I wanted to write about anyway.  In fact what I found, no matter what the prompt was I just wrote whatever I wanted to anyway.

I found that I learned a lot just from reading Hope’s posts, when she was fired up she would get them done way before me. I found I could read and enjoy her thoughts and not let them affect what I was writing.

After about twenty writing assignments or so, we switched it up and Hope was responsible for the prompt. That was more fun because then I could bug her to tell me what it is, rather than the other way around.   I still just wrote whatever I wanted to and included the prompt in some way. Other times the prompt was the story.

jonupclose7th
7th Grade Lookin” Good!

It was fun to have someone else “checking up” on your work and at first the only other person who knew why you were writing about the things you were.

It is just enough motivation to get you to give a little extra effort to make sure you got your post out that day. But most importantly it was fun.  Hope is a bit different, (in a good way), I know her personally and used to coach her in basketball. That was awhile ago but I enjoy seeing the young lady she has grown to become.

So I encourage anyone who is hitting a snag in their creativity or motivation to partner up or even group up and start a writing project.  It was a fun way to keep things interesting and to work on being creative.

It is called the Jefferson Writing Project because, Hope and I both lived in the town of Jefferson, Maine when we were growing up, and we both graduated from Jefferson Village School, and know that Jefferson is small, has a beach, and a cattle pound.  I do not know what the cattle pound is for,  but it exists. She likes to take pictures there. Thanks Hope for all the fun.  I will always be reading and commenting on your blog because that is how I roll.

30 Questions that Changed the Way I Think About the World

30 day challenges
The First of Many I Hope

by Jonathan Hilton

Have you ever seen the focus of your life change in thirty days? This is the experience that I have had over the last month as I have looked to improve my writing skill and myself, as a person as well.

This is an evaluation of my project to answer one question each day for thirty days, and to work on putting more of myself into my writing for the purpose of being more honest and open about the things I write about.

The beginning of this project

It began with a conversation with a collaborator who is a great writer and I was wishing that I was more honest in my writing; it was the conversation that led me to see this video on YouTube about this guy who undertook thirty day challenges to work on things he needs to work on.  Almost immediately I came across a list of “30 Questions That Will Change the Way you think about the world.”  The fact that there weren’t 35, 25 or 50

30 day challenges the beginning
The beginning of any journey starts with one small step.

questions, led me to believe that this was the project for me.

The rules I developed on the fly, but stuck to them until the end of the project, because I need rules apparently.

Rule #1 – had to answer a question each day and it had to be at least 300 words.  Many I could have answered in a sentence, but that wouldn’t have helped develop my thoughts.

Rule #2- I had to share my answers on Facebook, so that someone could read them if they wanted to. This really kept me more diligent and serious; I avoided some wise ass answers, because someone might read it.

Rule # 3- Much like fight club, I couldn’t talk about what I was doing.  I posted each question on FB every day, mostly to get some ideas for the days when I was low on creativity.  I was interested by the responses, and the different people they came from. I really appreciated the responses from everyone even if there was only one time; I read them all and appreciated it greatly.

I also published my answers on my website www.jonathanhilton.com and they are all there if you check the categories, Thirty Questions will bring them all up.

What Was the Goal of this project?

growth from contemplation
Answering from the heart was key

The goal of the project was more honesty and putting more of myself into my writing, which I thought was a weakness in my overall writing, it is difficult to put personal things out there, what you believe, what you think, but I think that if you never overcome this, you will be untrue to yourself the rest of your life, so that was the motivation. Most importantly I wanted to be able to write from a place that I didn’t care if someone liked it or not. That it was my answer and that would have to be good enough.

When someone asked me what the questions were about, I told them, if they wanted to know my answer, I directed them to my website.  Other than that I simply posted a question in the morning and then answered it on my website.  I never looked at the next question until the current question was answered.

What Did I Learn?

new person
we are all trying to remember who we are.

The first thing I learned was that my philosophy is developing and that I have a lot of consistency in what I believe in. What I have been working on personally has pervaded my thought and I believe that I have a great start.

Secondly when you ask one question and find an answer to that question, there are always going to be more questions that result from thought and that is ok.  The questions were answered and there were always a bunch more that cropped up.

Third, that there are different answers to questions, everyone has a different perspective and opinion and that is ok. All you can do is be open minded, yet faithful to what has been proven to you.

There are a lot of good people in the world and many have been asking themselves questions as well. Others are going to look for their answers in other places and find different behaviors satisfy them and they will find what they need to find in their answers, they may not have the same answers as you.

What Surprised Me?

There have been several neat relationships that have developed through the process of asking questions. Some people that I hadn’t heard from in years were prompted to contact me and see what the heck I was doing.  Even with people I see every day it gave me a chance to not only have an opinion but support it and fight for it.  My understanding of people is definitely higher, and my understanding of myself really was a surprise.

The many responses I got from such a wide range of people, some serious and some extremely funny, some sad, some just plain old sincere.

personal growth
Success, Success, Success

The most surprising thing was the freedom that came from just practicing the power of action into this thought process.  Creating and producing something that was completely of my own, based on what I believe is liberating. Many people have opinions on everything, but never publish them or have to stand by them which allows for a waffling on the beliefs. I believe that through answering these questions, my thoughts are there to be agreed with disagreed with defended or adjusted as they should be.  The biggest surprise was the power of the simple action on my own creativity and understanding of myself and others.

Was it a success?

I think by any measure the process was a success, the questions did actually change the way I looked at the world, and understood other people, so that awareness led to growth, and growing is a good thing.  I encourage anyone who has something that they want to work on to adopt a thirty day challenge of your own.  You will be surprised how it changes the way you look at the world, it definitely changed my perception of the world and those in it.

I definitely have written from the place inside me that does not care what anyone thinks about what I think or write, which is a major victory for my own self development. I think that if I can do that then everything else will be easy.

What is Next?

Well it is inevitable that one action is going to lead to another, so there are bound to be more of these 30 day challenges, in all areas of my life, in places that I feel I need personal work on.  So branching this type of growth out into other aspects of my life is definitely going to be a goal for me.  Taking more action to find what I am looking for.

Here is a complete list of the questions with links to my answers.
