Happiness is an Inside Job

finding happinessI don’t know about you, but finding happiness in life depends on my perceptions of things and the people around me.   When you focus your actions around the things you can control (inside/out)and avoid letting the stuff outside of your experience, you can’t control the behavior you are living outside in. You will continually find yourself living at the whims of the things that happen to you rather than dictating what you would like to happen to you.

There seem to be two choices in life. Either I live from the outside in or from the inside out. The choice dictates how large the portion of happiness I  experience at any particular time is. But what does it mean to live from the inside out? There are factors we can control in life and others outside of us that we do not. We are blessed with the choice of the outside or inside dominating our consciousness, so we control the amount of happiness we experience. Awesome!

From the Outside In Not Finding Happiness

Too often, We can find ourselves allowing the things and the people who come into our lives to dictate our mood. A great example of this would be when a finding happinessperson cuts you off in traffic, and you let that act affect your mood negatively, your anger rises, and you let your whole day get away from you. When we allow others’ decisions and choices to dictate our moods and actions, we are far from finding happiness in life. It can be the same as the people we care about. If they are in a bad mood for no fault of your own or are mad about something else, it is all out of your control.

That leads to me not taking responsibility for my life. It is too easy to send blame in the direction of whatever or whoever has changed my mood. I blame the traffic, blame the crowd, blame loved ones, or blame my friends. All of these are a cop-out because the only one who can choose to be angry or suffer because of someone else’s act is you. All you can control in this situation is your reaction to someone or something. Make sure it comes from a place of love. Finding happiness starts with accepting responsibility for our actions and lives, which means seeing the outside influences for what they are.

From the Inside Out

This is when you are at your best because the opposite of what is described above is happening. All thoughts and emotions about life events come from inside, and we choose their influence on us. We do not have to be angry unless we decide to be. There is no need to be frustrated unless we choose to be. We don’t have to let the non-stop external stimulus dictate our mood because the choices are made from our positive perspective, accepting full responsibility for all aspects of our lives. When your emotions radiate from inside yourself out, they will be more positive, and they will also radiate outward from you either positively or negatively.

This is the ultimate responsibility because when you choose the reactions that you experience, your true self is allowed to come through. Each of us has this ability, but it gets clouded through the lens of what society has told us is essential, rather than making decisions based on what we feel is right or wrong. There is no unhealthy attachment to things outside of you because you’re living from the thoughts, words, and actions inside of yourself.

You Are The Shot Caller for Finding Happiness

Living from the inside out allows us to be the best representation of ourselves that we can be. What the media tells you about how you should look no longer matters. Finding happiness does not come from what “they” tell you to do, be or look like; it isn’t relevant anymore. What they ask you to enjoy isn’t a part of your story anymore  (unless you allow it), and you are becoming your best self if you pay attention to the thoughts and emotions that radiate from you.

You are responsible for your moods and emotions because what you think, say, and do comes from inside you and radiates in waves out into the world rather than the other way around. Your inner goodness is a force that needs to be shared with the world. We are all happier when we focus on what we can control and make good choices and leave the things we can’t control, helping ourselves and others find happiness. Please focus on the things you can manage and push them in the direction you want to go. You have no idea what power you possess until you focus on deploying it in a valuable and vital way from the inside out.

Overcome Failure

Which is worse, failing or never trying?

Nobody in their right mind would ever set out to fail because accomplishment is what people have been programmed to strive for. Yet, I look at our society, and I see a significant fear of failure in the eyes of most.  It has been bred from our earliest school days, “Do what we tell you and succeed,” “Never try something your not sure of, or you might fail.”  I think that history is full of people who have seen their share of disappointment and failure. Yet, these initial setbacks worked as a springboard to future success.  Failure is never fatal. Quitting is. Why is it that our educational systems seem to fear failure so?

Failure is a word that has negative connotations attached to it.  Nobody wants to be seen as a failure, associated with a failure, or even admit that they have experienced failure.

The perception of being a failure can harm different parts of our society, from stock market prices to the power of a celebrity at the box office.  Being a winner is preferable to being a loser. Yet, it is a fact that sometimes we all lose.

However, if you spend a little time looking at the lessons that you learned over the expanse of your life, you probably learned a lot more from the losses you experienced than from any other teacher you have ever had.  Failure is not fun to experience, but learning to deal with it and rise above it is one of the most valuable tools you will ever acquire.

reach.  Once you take ownership of what has happened and recognize why you fell short, you can take steps to continue working to achieve that goal. Often your ultimate success was driven by that initial faltering attempt.

One of the best things about becoming involved in athletics as a child is learning how to overcome setbacks in a controlled environment, learning valuable life lessons safely. These lessons are directly applicable to life. You will not always get the job, sometimes there is criticism of your work, and you don’t always win.

If you keep striving to win, though, and you evaluate your shortcomings honestly, then a person can overcome almost any failure and find success in the end.  That success can extend to any part of your life.

Why Are We So Afraid?

Thomas Edison quote on failureIt seems like today and parents are so involved in their kids’ lives that often, children are not allowed the freedom to fail at anything.

Either because they never want their kids to feel bad, or the parents are living vicariously through the accomplishments of their young ones.

Either way, kids are often taught that everyone is a winner and participate in non-competitive games, which sends an unrealistic life lesson because life is not that way.

Life has a way of testing you and finding out what you are made of.  Life is a game that you can’t win, you can only play it, and a healthy part of it is that sometimes things will not work out for you.

I would think that if I had never understood this that the first time failure came to me, I might have a nervous breakdown and never recover.  Yet, the hope of accomplishment and greatness keeps people marching forward, despite the risks of failure and the pain involved in not getting what you want.

If you work toward a goal, then you will have an opportunity to achieve that goal.

Give It A Shot, Then At Least You Know

When it comes never to try, you will avoid experiencing this failure, but you will also never learn the lessons that failure inevitably teaches you.  All things are not accomplished quickly, but if we persevere, we can achieve almost anything.

Never trying is way worse than failure. You will never know your capabilities unless you test yourself.

You will never improve physically, mentally, or spiritually unless you push yourself a little.  When you push yourself, sometimes you fail.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to it. Learning this lesson will be one of the valuable experiences you will have.  And at least you will know, definitively once and for all, what you are capable of.   You are a great human soul with unlimited potential and effort, and fearless acceptance of the consequences will take you there.

Music

How I see music
Music is a language all unto itself, which connects souls.

I have never read a quote that describes my connection to music and this one from Albert Einstein.  For as long as I can remember, there has always been music in my life that had comforted me when I was down, encouraged me in life, and motivated me to achieve things that I have and am accomplishing.

There is something about a song that moves past your meaningless thoughts and into your soul.  It is personal for each of us, and I am sure that not everyone sees music as I do, but I understand and encourage more for those who do.

Much like Einstein, many of my daydreams are played along to the music in my life, like personalized music videos in my head. When MTV started to show videos, I thought that it was about time that others saw the music as I do.  (My videos were always better.) That connection is unstoppable, and I have an almost unstoppable urge to hear it again.

So many songs have come into my life that it is difficult to pick a certain style of music that I like more than another.  My generation grew up with what I think is a great variety of music, so I have enjoyed everything from the Beach Boys to Led Zeppelin.

Love My Lyrics

In my young days, I would spend hours listening and thinking about that situation, that girl, that moment, that memory, and enjoy that song.

I had a desire to know the lyrics to every song that I liked. I used to write them down in a notebook so that I could memorize them.  (If only I worked so diligently on my school work)  I compiled hundreds of songs, and in the days before the internet, this was not so easy.

Generally, I would record a song off the radio and then play a line, pause it, write it down and then play, pause and write again until I had the entire lyrics to the song.  Now I laugh at the ease with which I can see the lyrics from any song.  It is much easier than deciphering the mumbling words and phrases of songs from the ’70s and ’80s.

To this day, I would guess I could remember the words to every song that I wrote the lyrics to over 30 years ago.  Is that a talent or a sickness?

Mixed Tapes and Musical OCD

Then as I got a little older, I started making mixed tapes that were not only songs I liked but became the soundtrack to that moment in my life.  I would also give each one a title that explained what was happening at that time in my life.

There were so many of these, which went with relationships, experiences, and people in my past.  The connection was fleeting in one way because those people, relationships, and times are gone, but they are also timeless.

If I hear a song today from that soundtrack, I am immediately transported back to that feeling or emotion I felt so long ago, like a time machine.  Songs that remind me of people are the best because I have been fortunate to have had experiences with so many great people.

Does Anyone See Music Like Me?

As I moved through life, I continued to listen but found that few people saw the music the way that I did, or at least they forgot how to.  I thought that the problem was with me, so I kept my mouth shut and continued listening and singing along.  I didn’t make my own soundtracks then because I thought it was childish.  What stupid things we think sometimes. Music was still there, waiting every time I looked for it.

Now we have the wonders of technology to make music more available than it has ever.

If you told me that I would have an iPod back in 1980, I would have laughed in your face.  I was pretty excited when I got my first walkman.

Surprisingly there are more soundtracks today that define my life than there have ever been before.  I make a new one about every week, and the titles define what is happening.  Or they mention an event that happened around that time.

Much like Einstein, I often think of music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music, and there is nothing wrong with that.  In fact, I wonder how drab life would be without it.

Be a Thinker

thinkOne of the things that all people can do is think. Some of us do a better job than others at this skill, but we all create thousands of thoughts each day. In all of this thought creation, it is fun to look at how the brain works. We can only hold one thought in our minds at a time. The tenor of that thought will affect us through a chemical reaction in the brain, so how you think can affect your health and quality of life.

Subconscious Workings When You Think

Most of us go through life thinking that we have control over our lives and the thinkthoughts we think, yet it is estimated that somewhere between 95-99% of our thoughts come from the subconscious mind and are automated responses to well-rehearsed stimuli. This is great in some ways because there are things we do like eating, walking, talking, etc., which would make life difficult if you had to relearn these tasks daily.  The problem comes when other ideas are accepted as true that limit your life abilities or your enjoyment of life.  Most of this programming is done to the subconscious brain during the first 12 years of life. That makes sense as our brains try to figure out the best way to manage our way through relationships, education, expectations, family, and all of the other things that life presents.

Think About Limiting Beliefs

thinkThe limiting beliefs become a part of our programming and lead to our minds telling us what is possible. When we set a bigger goal, our subconscious mind will come up with an attack of negative self-talk. Which makes the goal seem impossible for us to achieve.

We are indeed our own worse enemy in this case.  We need to learn to put our foot down and refuse to listen to this talk. It is time to start to trust your talent and give your goal the attention and action it will take to achieve it. Our thoughts are the true measure of what we can accomplish. Our lives are a direct reflection of the quality and depth of the things we think. Our ability to accomplish is only limited by the level of thinking we create. High or low, you are behind it all.

Feed your brain positive and positive will result, negative will result in negative.

Those flights can be painful, tiresome, jet-lagging, and not to mention absolutely boring despite whatever Disney movie is playing above you on the TV screen. As someone who has flown from Europe to the USA countless times, I’ve picked up some tips and tricks on flying long haul. Here are my tips.

Bring a scarf or jacket.

A scarf especially can act as a blanket or pillow during your long haul flight. Nowadays it’s becoming less common to have a blanket included on your flight, and sometimes the cabin doesn’t even have enough for everyone. The best advice is to bring something functional just in case because flights can get quite chilly. A relatively thick, large scarf will almost always do the job.

Pack a memory foam neck pillow.

Once again, you want to be comfortable on your flight and no matter if you’re in the window, aisle, or middle seat, a memory foam neck pillow will make it all the more comfortable and relaxing for you.

Tip: Some people are hesitant to pack a neck pillow because of space. But most neck pillows have a snap closure, meaning you can easily snap it onto your carry on handle or strap it to your personal item. When it doubt, you can always wear it around your neck. No shame.

If you’re flying through the day, an eye mask will be extremely helpful in getting some relatively normal shut-eye. If you’re flying on a red eye flight, it’s less necessary, but honestly every little bit helps.

I’m Really Blue, Are You?

I am definitely blue, but not in a bad way!

Pouring over my daily dose of inspiration I was looking for a great idea to write about, and most great ideas come from other bloggers who know much more than me.

I didn’t have to look very far to find one that hit me right where I live.  It was on the site called Creative Guru , which features great ideas, fantastic writing and a tale of self discovery.

Today there was a post about what color she is, not literally, but here personality.  That she was once a yellow but over time has become more of a blue.  She started to have blue infiltrate her life, to fill it up. Blue just started to show up in clothing and household items.

I was intrigued because I was trying to see if there was a color that had infiltrated my life.  I enjoyed the writing so much I commented and stated that I didn’t particularly notice any color all over my life.  She suggested to start by noticing the color of the shirt I was wearing today.

I looked down at my blue jacket I had on, and unzipped the coat.  Revealing a shirt the exact shade of blue as the jacket.  “That is kind of strange” I thought to myself, then noticed further the blue pants I had on.  I looked like a giant walking blueberry. I even had blue socks on!

It was absolutely true that I put no thought into what I was going to wear today, I just picked what jumped out at me and that was blue.  How accurate could this color business be? Well here is what blue is said to reveal about your personality:

” Lovers of blue have a deep need to find inner peace and truth, to live their life according to their ideals and beliefs without having to change their inflexible viewpoint of life to satisfy others.”

This was kind of a strange thing because without looking very hard I found the following pieces I have written in the past year about living my life by my own ideals.

Then I learned that those who favor Indigo:

“have a need to feel in harmony and at one with the Universe and to be accepted by others as the aware and intuitive spiritual beings that they are.”

Which I wrote about in a post called My Biggest Fear, which happens to be the fear of what others think about me.  Much of what I write is from a spiritual perspective or has been influenced by my journey of self discovery.  Then I was totally psyched up because there is definitely something to this color business.  You can pick almost any of the posts I have written and they come from this base.  Read any of the Thirty Question Project posts and they will reveal the truth, that yes, I am blue, but in a good way!

Then I started to think about how blue I really am, how I own other color shirts but I like blue the best, from my trusty superman shirt to any and all New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox paraphernalia I wear on a semi-regular basis. Blue, blue, blue, there is no escaping it I am a blue man.  I should move to Vegas and join the Blue Man Group.

In all seriousness I enjoy learning about new things so much, and to find out things that are signs of why I think the way I do, act the way I do, and wear what I wear.

This was so much fun and such a great experience that I decided to post it immediately so if you are interested in seeing where your personality type lies then follow the link below!
